The Anthems That Guide Me
Approaching the fifth anniversary of my last sip of alcohol at a work event on January 19, 2019, I'm truly amazed at how rapidly these five years have passed.
Tomorrow stands as a significant milestone in my journey to alcohol-freedom since that night of laughter and farewells, a moment etched in memories, both clear… and blurred. It serves as a reminder of the transformative decision I made – opting for a path of self-discovery and personal growth over the fleeting escape of a drink.
In this half-decade, I've come to realize that the party wasn't just a celebration; it marked the conclusive chapter of my relationship with alcohol. Approaching this anniversary is more than the ticking of a clock; it's a reflection on the incredible changes and invaluable lessons shaping my journey. Amidst the highs and lows, five phrases have helped me immensely, guiding me away from the tempting allure of a drink and grounding me in the resolute commitment to my alcohol-free self.
“It’s a trade-off not worth making.”
The realization that whatever may entice me to drink isn't worth sacrificing the days of my alcohol-free life serves as a strong deterrent. My alcohol-freedom is a cornerstone, and veering off that path could lead to places I don’t want to be again. Despite the occasional urges to 'let go' or 'celebrate,' alcohol won't be the remedy. Stepping back, recalibrating, and crafting a new strategy provide a better shot at addressing the root cause.
“Consider the impact on your well-being.”
Reflecting on the toll alcohol took on my health – anxiety, depression, a dull complexion, and physical distress – is a substantial factor in resisting the urge. Old photos and memories portray the unhealthy version of myself. Today, being in the best shape of my life both physically and mentally, the idea of jeopardizing this progress is a powerful reason to abstain.
“How will you feel tomorrow morning?”
The allure of a drink might seem reasonable in the moment, yet the inevitable remorse and guilt the next day act as powerful deterrents. The memory of waking up in regret, having broken promises to myself, is a great reminder. The prospect of experiencing those emotions again and enduring the aftermath of debilitating hangovers and anxiety (aka ‘hangxiety’) serves as motivation to resist the occasional urge.
“What are you sacrificing for the future?”
Focus on the future. While moderation might seem manageable momentarily, the sobering reality is that I'll likely revert to old ways. Reminding myself that drinking jeopardizes the hopes and aspirations I have for my future is key.
“Remember Your Why.”
This anthem intertwines with the tune of my ever-changing life, gently nudging me to recall that choosing sobriety wasn't a solitary decision but an ongoing dedication to living true to myself and embracing the values that light my path. The significant shifts in my life since saying goodbye to alcohol prompt me to revisit the motivations that initially fuelled this journey, consistently reinforcing the essence of my 'why.'
Every individual's journey to alcohol-freedom is unique. While these five internal questions were particularly helpful in my early days, I've found that they continue to resonate, even though urges are rare. What’s most important is discovering what works for you and making the commitment to prioritize your path. The journey may be challenging, but with the right mindset and support, it becomes about building a future that aligns with your authentic self.
